What is public sector?

Every level of government is included in the definition of the public sector, from the national to the state to the municipal level.

The public sector in the United States is responsible for providing essential and ubiquitous services such as homeland security, defense, fire fighting, police protection, corrections, urban planning, taxation, and a wide variety of social programmes. Other examples of essential and universal services include:

There are several areas in which the public and private sectors interact and share responsibilities, such as the manufacturing or provision of particular goods and services. The extent to which each of these regions overlap one another varies greatly from country to country, state to province, and municipality to municipality. The most common places where this problem arises are in the domains of sanitation, health care, security, and shelters for the homeless and those who have been abused.

In the realm of service providers, it is not uncommon for workers to move back and forth between the public and private sectors. In recent years, a prevalent pattern that is commonly referred to as privatisation has been seen. When this occurs, responsibility for providing the service shifts from the private sector to the public sector. There are fewer examples of this, but some governments are moving into the role of commercial providers in the health care industry, either by providing such services directly or by testing them out in pilot programmes. While there are fewer cases of this, it is still happening.

When we talk about “outsourcing,” we’re referring to the frequent practise of governments entering into contracts with private corporations to supply the public sector with goods and services. Examples include the construction and upkeep of things like aeroplanes, military hardware, computers, electronics, communications, highways, bridges, parks, and recreational areas.
